Ammann’s commitment to sustainability is often obvious. For example, a line of our asphalt-mixing plants includes “recycling” in the name.

Latest Technologies and Innovations

How can we use less, and how can we make what we do use last longer? These questions are at the core of Ammann’s sustainable efforts.

We pore over our existing plants, machines and processes in search of improvements, no matter how small they may seem. After all, incremental steps add up – a lesson we’ve learned over our more than 150 years in business.

What has this commitment brought? We’ve reduced emissions across all plants and machines, lessened fluid disposal needs and dramatically upgraded asphalt recycling capabilities – among other advances.

Emissions and Efficiency

Asphalt-mixing plant emissions

Ammann’s efforts start with the burner and the built-in efficiencies that not only meet, but surpass, the world’s tightest emissions standards.

The efforts go beyond fuel burn. We dissect every stage of the asphalt mixing process and search for steps where we can remove dust, odour and noise.

  • Our highly proficient baghouses further lower exhaust dust to less than 10 mg/m³, an exemplary benchmark.

  • Bitumen fumes are the primary source of odour. As we do with dust, we have odour reduction points – in this case, they are in the bitumen tanks, the skip and load-out levels, and the stack.

  • Noise reductions start with equipping burners with quiet variable speed motor drives and stack silencers, which control exhaust noise. Sound suppression options even include cladding of the plant.

Safety

Protecting the world around us includes keeping Ammann customers and employees out of harm’s way.

Plants and machines have built-in protections that keep operators, and others on the jobsite, safe. It starts with secure machine transport and includes jobsite safeguards such as infrared remote control and a dead man’s handle on machines – and lower sound levels at asphalt-mixing plants.

The pandemic has broadened the concept of safety – for both our customers and employees. It prompted Ammann to put steps in place to protect our customer interactions – and to safeguard our employees when building the plants and machines that help our customers succeed.

Meanwhile, Ammann manufacturing processes and facilities are constantly examined to ensure those who make the products are as safe as those who use them.

EcoMode and VarioSpeed

EcoMode reduces fuel consumption, noise and emissions. It adjusts engine rpm to the jobsite’s requirements through a variably controlled system. The automatic adjustments maximise engine efficiency – and minimise fuel consumption and noise.

VarioSpeed is a patented drive concept that ensures optimal RPMs at all times. A computer determines the necessary RPM and makes automatic adjustments. The drops in fuel consumption are significant, with savings up to 15%.

Zero eMission

Who benefits from eMission?

Machine owners are able to bid on zero-emissions projects and profit from the low total cost of ownership. They also can take satisfaction in their responsible behavior.
Machine operators appreciate increased comfort. The machines are quiet and there is no vibration from a combustible engine. Minimal maintenance is needed, and operators can easily switch from a diesel machine to an e-drive – all while doing their part to advance sustainability.

What does eMission achieve?

  • Zero emission.

  • Improved profits through reduced maintenance costs.

  • High performance because of expansive battery capacity and a unique vibratory solution.

  • Efficient use of valuable resources thanks to the electric drive and its break from fossil fuels.

  • Improved efficiency, quality and safety as a result of digital technology.

Product innovation

Sometimes, an entirely fresh approach is needed to meet challenges both new and old. Ammann’s advanced engineering team has a history of creative and innovative thinking.

The proof is in a broad range of climate efforts – including the fossil-fuel free asphalt-mixing plant, an Intelligent Compaction system that reduces fuel burn and emissions, the use of alternative fuels, and many, many more.

Product innovation

Zero waste system

With continuous asphalt-mixing plants, the first and last few tonnes of every shift are waste.

At least they were. An Ammann team of experts developed a patented solution that ensures all mix has the proper percentage of larger aggregates and fines from the very start to the very end. The creative solution prevents up to 5 tonnes of mix per plant per shift from going into the scrap pile – every day.

At our global production facilities, we prioritize sustainability through advanced technology and efficient, resource-conserving processes. Modern machinery and lean practices help minimize energy consumption and emissions, reducing our environmental footprint. By 2035, we aim to achieve over 50% renewable electricity use in our operations and reduce our Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emission intensity by 30%. By 2050, we are committed to using 100% renewable electricity and achieving net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions.

The health and safety of our employees are top priorities, led by our management, and embedded across our operations. We are committed to fostering a safe, compliant workplace where every team member can work confidently and securely. We empower employees to uphold the highest safety and compliance standards through ongoing training. Our long-term objective is to maintain a rate of fewer than five severe incidents—those resulting in over three days’ absence—per 1,000 employees annually, reflecting our dedication to their well-being.
